Le Gateau au Yaourt

In France, this traditional recipe is used to introduce children to the world of cooking. This is a very simple recipe because it involves simple ingredients and you can measure everything out using the yogurt pot. It's also a good way to teach children to count, and can be easily adapted so you can add your own creative twist.

1 sachet of vanilla sugar (7.5g)Ingredients

½ sachet of baking powder (or 1 tsp baking powder)

1 x 150g pot Longley Farm Natural Yogurt

½ pot of vegetable oil

1½ pots of sugar

3 pots self-raising flour

3 eggs

A pinch of salt

If you can't find vanilla sugar you could add a little vanilla extract, or try making it using a pot of our vanilla yogurt instead

Preheat the oven to 180°C

Grease a round cake tin or a loaf tin. The loaf tin is the best shape to use as the cake is light and this will help keep it nice an moist - also it is the perfect shape to spread on some jam or chocolate spread!

Scoop the yogurt into a mixing bowl then, while mixing well, add the rest of the ingredients in the following order: sugar, eggs one by one, baking powder, flour, salt, oil.

Pour the mixture into the tin and bake in the oven for 35 minutes

Be Creative

You can create a wide range of cakes by adding different flavours:

Lemon Cake: replace the natural yogurt with lemon yogurt and add some lemon zest

Chocolate Cake: add 200g melted dark chocolate

Apple Cake: add one tablespoon of calvados and two sliced apples to the mix.
